RELEASE: NJNP CALLS FOR JUSTICE FOR STEPHANIE HINTON, HATE CRIME MUST BE INDEPENDENTLY INVESTIGATED
>
““We want Black Women to feel safe. They should not feel afraid driving down the street wondering if someone will attack them. This is not okay, and we are not okay; however we will work towards making sure things are better than just okay moving forward.””
Des Moines, IA — Leaders with NO JUSTICE NO PEACE PAC and NEW FRONTIER ACTION FUND are calling for justice for Stephanie Hinton, who was brutally attacked and targeted in Des Moines on August 16th according to a recent news report by KCCI. Four white men in masks attacked Stephanie, who was later admitted to a hospital with a broken leg. This is clearly a hate crime and must be addressed as such by our community and law enforcement.
Eddie Mauro, President of New Frontier Action, said, “It appears that Stephanie was assaulted for no other reason than the color of her skin. Every Iowan, every American, should denounce these senseless acts of violence. We have a lot of work to do in our community and country to put an end to racial violence. No Justice No Peace (NJNP) is challenging all of our communities to grasp the systemic racism and extraordinary violence African Americans have lived with and continue to experience in a unique and deep way during our nation’s history. NJNP is asking for anyone with knowledge of this event to come forward and contact the Des Moines Police Department.”
NO JUSTICE NO PEACE and NEW FRONTIER ACTION FUND are actively engaging communities of color in Iowa to build a Black New Deal that includes violence protection programs. Other community organizations such as Mothers Against Violence are also speaking out against this senseless hate crime.
New Frontier Action Fund Director of Partnerships Rob Johnson said, “We want Black Women to feel safe. They should not feel afraid driving down the street wondering if someone will attack them. This is not okay, and we are not okay; however we will work towards making sure things are better than just okay moving forward.”
Former U.S. Senate Candidate Eddie Mauro formed NO JUSTICE NO PEACE PAC and NEW FRONTIER ACTION FUND with Des Moines Community Leader Rob Johnson, and Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party Black Caucus Al Womble. Their mission is to advance policy and action related to racial justice & equity, economic justice, climate change, and campaign finance reform. Both organizations provide direct services and coordinating support in communities across Iowa while advocating for policy that advances their goals.
