NO JUSTICE NO PEACE HOSTS ‘JUSTICE FOR THE VOICELESS’ VIGIL SHARING STORIES FROM AFRICAN AMERICAN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE
No Justice No Peace PAC is holding the ‘Justice for the Voiceless’ Vigil tonight, October 9th, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in Des Moines’ Union Park. The event was organized by local organizers Diamond Denney and Jailyn Vrban with support from the team at No Justice No Peace.
No Justice No Peace Director of Partnerships Rob Johnson said, “The media tends to focus on the stories of police or community violence impacting people of color for a few days, then move on. We need to lift the stories of those who some have forgotten. Who don’t get the national attention. We need more attention paid to the daily violence and micro-aggressions Black and Latino communities experience daily.”
The event will feature speakers including Stephanie Hinton, a victim of a brutal racially motivated attack in Des Moines during the Summer of 2020. In addition to Stephanie Hinton, there will be letters read from Darquan Jones, speeches from Rev. Rob Johnson and Al Womble of the Iowa Democratic Party’s Black Caucus, and more.
Additionally, the vigil will feature a musical performance by Sharane Calister, a Des Moines resident and Season 14 contestant on NBC’s ‘The Voice’.
No Justice No Peace will be registering voters, helping voters with Absentee Ballot Requests, and facilitating connections with community organizations at the event. Participants will be available for 1:1 interviews. Please contact Mark Langgin @ 515-707-0266 / mark@nojusticepac.org for more information or scheduling.
